Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G speeds are a sight to behold

We know the UK’s first 5G network to go live will be EE on 30 May, with Vodafone following shortly after on 3 July. How large actual improvements in performance will be remains to be seen, although reports suggest 5G will be 20 times faster than 4G.

If this video posted by Verizon’s PR manager George Koroneos is anything to go by, then we’ve got every reason to get excited about 5G’s arrival in the UK.

The video, posted on Twitter, shows the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G reaching download speeds of 1Gbit/sec in the US, where 5G launched earlier this month on the Verizon network.

That’s quite a feat, considering current 4G speeds only reach up to 100Mbits/sec on average, and would mean 5G’s download speeds are on par with home fibre broadband. If this video is anything to go by, we can expect to see smartphone download speeds increase significantly as we move over to 5G.

Of course, there is the small fact that Verizon’s network is relatively empty at the moment, having only launched this month. So it’ll be interesting to see how well these speeds hold up when the Galaxy S10 has a number of other devices to contend with.

While it’s expected that 5G speeds will start at 1Gbit/sec in the UK, Ofcom predicts that users could see average speeds of between 10Gbits/sec and 50Gbits/sec once 5G has developed further.

Initially, 5G will be available through EE in London, Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Manchester. Following suit, Vodafone 5G will roll out across Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London. Both networks will add more cities later in the year.

If you happen to live in one of the major cities initially getting 5G, you can test these speeds out for yourself. The Samsung Galaxy S10, alongside a slew of other 5G-ready smartphones, is available for preorder on both the EE network and Vodafone.
